Once again, the annual surveys to patients and families were sent out for a six-month period during 2014. We sent out a total of 761 surveys to patients and relatives/carers across the services and 239 surveys were returned (31%). We included questions about the care received, how staff communicate with patients and families and asked for general feedback. Here are some of the results:

  1. Do you feel staff treat you with:
Inpatient Unit (IPU) patients Community Team (CT) patients Day Services (DS) patients
    Compassion 100% 93% 91%
    Understanding 100% 93% 97%
    Courtesy 100% 97% 97%
    Respect 100% 98% 94%
    Dignity 100% 99% 97%
  2. Overall, do you have confidence in the staff
IPU patients IPU relatives CT patients CT relatives DS patients Palliative Care Support Service relatives
    Completely 100% 84% 95% 96% 97% 97%
  3. Would you recommend the service to friends or family
IPU patients IPU relatives CT patients CT relatives DS patients Palliative Care Support Service relatives
    Yes 100% 100% 95% 94% 97% 100%

Overall the results were extremely good and are shared with all staff. Where there is a disappointing result, this area will be looked at to try and improve the service to patients, families and carers. This year, increasing awareness of our out-of-hours telephone service and the availability of therapies (eg reiki, reflexology etc) are two of the areas that we are seeking to improve. The full survey report is now available to download below.
