Markets, Monks & Marxists – A Walk through historic Clerkenwell

Join our North West Support walk for a terrific stroll through this fascinating area of London.

John Colmans is a London Blue Badge Guide who, when not conducting tours around Lord’s Cricket Ground, leads walks around many parts of London — and at the last count, had about thirty different walks in his repertoire, ranging from tourist Westminster to Jack The Ripper.

The Clerkenwell walk starts with a stroll through the historic area of Smithfield where, as well as walking through the famous market, looks at the earlier history of the site, as well as passing famous locations, such as St Barts Hospital.  Walk then moves into Clerkenwell Green (start of many a protest march) and St James’s Church.  The walk concludes by looking at two great monastic institutions, what remains of the Priory of St John of Jerusalem and the famous Charterhouse monastery.  The cast of characters will include among many others, George 1V, Hercule Poirot, John Betjeman, Thomas Britton (the musical coalman) andthe Fat Boy of Pie Corner.
