Mum & daughter’s hair-raising fundraiser
When Enfield mum Katy Greenberg decided to raise money for North London Hospice to say thank you for the care it had given her mum, she opted for a sponsored haircut!
She persuaded eldest daughter Ellie to join her for the challenge and the pair had 10 inches of their luscious locks cut in front of friends and family at the Hospice’s North Finchley site. The memorable occasion took place on 21stJune, the first anniversary of Katy’s mum’s passing.
And the hair has not ended up in the bin but has been donated to the Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs free of charge to children and young adults who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses.
Their wonderful gesture has so far raised an impressive £1200 for North London Hospice.
Katy, a school lunchtime supervisor, said: “We are very grateful and truly touched by our family, friends and the community for supporting us and making such generous gifts to the North London Hospice who are simply amazing. The care and attention they gave my mum, Ellie’s grandma was above and beyond. Not just for the patient, but for us too.”
Ellie, who is in Year 8 at JFS School, added: “Pupils at my school were amazing. People were emptying their purses to donate. It was the same at my sister Hannah’s school. People have been so generous. I was a bit nervous beforehand but quite excited too.”
Katy’s mum Diane was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis in 2016 and was cared for by hospice staff.
Katy added: “While mum was being cared for by the Hospice, I spent nearly every day here. My dad even offered to pay my salary so I could be here more. After everything the Hospice did for mum, we wanted to give back.”
And the new hairstyle??? “We’re off to Spain in the summer holidays. Short hair is perfect for the hot weather!”
