North London Hospice will dramatically improve the lives of people living with life-limiting illnesses with the opening of a new site in Enfield. After five-years in the making the North London Hospice site, in Barrowell Green, Winchmore Hill, welcomed its first day patients on Thursday 16 August. North London Hospice has provided care and support services for outpatients from Barnet, Haringey and Enfield for almost 20 years. Until now, those services have all been provided from an established inpatient unit in Finchley. The new Enfield facility, which will offer an enhanced range of services, will eventually allow the hospice to reach three times as many members of the community who have a life-limited or terminal illness and those who support them. Patient Eleni Robb, who lives in nearby Edmonton, welcomed the centre. She was able to enjoy the first art therapy and relaxation sessions in the building. Mrs Robb, 76, said: “The new centre is going to make a huge difference to my life as I will be able to receive day care closer to home. “I love art so I’m really looking forward to being able to take part in sessions and learn new things. It’s an opportunity for me to be more independent and meet people in a similar situation to me.” The building has a number of treatment rooms to provide specialist procedures without the patient having to visit a hospital; counselling and spiritual care to enable people to deal with the emotional stress of their situation and physiotherapy to help patients maintain mobility for longer. In addition, massage, reflexology, creative and complementary therapies will be available to reduce anxiety, assist in pain relief and control other symptoms. New opportunities of support will also be available for patients’ carers and families. North London Hospice chief executive Douglas Bennett said: “It has been a particularly busy and exciting time for the hospice. This fantastic new facility will maximise the opportunities for enjoyment and life enrichment for patients and their families at a difficult time. “It will allow us to be in an even better position to ensure people can stay independent and at home for as long as possible by providing high quality day services to even more patients and their families.” Currently, the facility is for patients already known to the community specialist palliative care team in the boroughs of Enfield, Barnet and Haringey.
