Barnet Personal Trainer Anne Iarchy faced the toughest physical challenge of her life this summer when she decided to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and raise funds for North London Hospice.

Fitness was only half the battle, and she trained for months in preparation before the July 26thstart date. “Altitude was the main unknown as it affects people in different ways, no matter how fit you may be.” explained Anne. ” I expected to ache every morning but didn’t, so that was good. But as we got higher the altitude really started to make things difficult.”

The 54-kilometre climb up to the summit at 5895 metres and down again took seven days and the terrain was tough. “We were walking for six or seven hours a day. The views were amazing and it was like being in a different world. There were no phones and you were completely focused on the task in hand.”

Anne chose to raise funds for North London Hospice and had great support, raising £4207 to date for patient care. “The Hospice is part of the local community and I’ve known several people whose families have used its services and spoken of the incredible care and support. I wanted to do something to help.”

From Day One Anne suffered with the effects of the altitude but battled on until close to the summit. “We started the climb at 1800 metres and I had bouts of dizziness while walking from the end of the first day. The final climb to the summit was through the night and the team were checking our oxygen levels all the time. I felt really bad and unfortunately they wouldn’t allow me to go on due to a lack of oxygen. I was so close but I’m still proud of how far I got. It’s been a big year for me but very worthwhile. Fundraising for a great cause and taking on a personal challenge is a great combination.”
