An evening of glitz and glamour were on the cards at the Poets Society Opal Ball. But the stars of the night were North London Hospice’s ambassadors whose stories about their journeys with NLH put the spotlight on the importance of hospice care.

The Poets Society of Enfield, a group of like-minded people from the construction industry in London and the Home Counties, chose the Hospice as the beneficiary from their Opal Ball and between them, the 140 guests raised an incredible £11,346 on the night.

The organizing committee, headed by Poets’ Chairman Chris Gardner, put together a wonderful evening which took place at the Noke Hotel in St Albans on Saturday 20 October.  As well as dinner and dancing, guests heard about the work and services of the hospice.

Ann-Marie Wilson spoke with great passion about the support she has received from our Health & Wellbeing Centre over the years and the friends she has made along the way. “The hospice,” she told guests “allows you to remember the person you were before you became the person with an incurable condition.”

Guests also heard from Nicola Miller from our Bereavement Service who spoke very movingly about the support that she and her family had received when her mother was diagnosed and died shortly afterwards from bowel cancer.  Nicola’s experience of the love and care she received at the time, led her to first volunteer and later join the hospice bereavement team to help others losing a precious loved one.

The generosity of guests was incredible and two raffles and an auction later over £11,000 had been raised for patient care.

It was a wonderful evening, which not only raised a huge amount of money but also spread the word about the work and wide variety of services offered by the hospice that enable people facing a life-limiting illness to live well for as long as possible.
