In total 22 runners completed the Virgin London Marathon on Sunday 21 April in aid of North London Hospice. Among those running was Donna Lee. Cheered on by her family Donna completed her first marathon after her dad Philip put her name down for a charity place at North London Hospice. The hospice looked after Philip, who had terminal lung cancer, until his death in March last year. Six months later Donna’s mother Carol died in hospital after being diagnosed with leukaemia. Donna said: “As a child I used to watch the marathon with my dad every year and used to say one day I’m going to do that. “It has been an extremely tough year and one where many people would have given up but it has given me the determination to do my family proud. “It’s all been about making my dad proud by completing it and raising as much money as I can for the Hospice that provided him with the most amazing care.” Also representing the Hospice were Finchley couple Jonathan and Lauren Barr. Jonathan managed to cross the finish line in four hours, 55 seconds – with his wife coming in just before at four hours, 28 minutes. The event was a special occasion for the pair as they celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary on Monday 22 April. They have raised more than £6,000. Landlord of the White Lion Pub Karl Koroscik pushed his body to the limit by completing 20 miles of the course backwards. Having run three marathons before, Karl was eager to do something different this time round. Guided along the route by his forward facing friend Ian Franklin, 54, Karl managed to cross the finish line backside-first. He said: “I didn’t expect it to be as painful as it was, especially on my toes – I’ve got massive blisters. But Ian kept me going, telling me where to go. I really couldn’t have done it without him. It was a total team effort.” The pair has already raised more than £3,500 for the Hospice but hopes to boost their total with an auction night at the White Lion this week. Community fundraiser Natalie Gordon said: “It was such an inspirational day and we are so incredibly proud of all our runners. “With their tremendous efforts we hope to have raised a staggering £44,000. We wish to thank each of them for all their support and hard work.” A huge congratulations and thank you to:
